Gotta Wonder

from Prime Mover by Rocco of the Snow

/

about

This song is about the seasons of power. It’s also about the naivité of leaders (as an analogy for the ego) both past and present, thinking that they are sovereign and that they rule by divine right.

The king (ego) in this song is growing suspicious of his people, hearing rumblings of revolt. He dons himself in commoner’s clothing and journeys down from his castle into a dark alley in the village below. He enters a creepy old cottage where a soothsayer lives. The rumors of the king’s overthrowing are confirmed by the soothsayer who draws images in the king’s mind. He gets angry at the fortune and refuses to acknowledge it as truth, threatening to behead the soothsayer as a result of her prediction.

In the bridge of the song, the villagers indeed revolt. They storm the castle walls and all hell breaks loose. Eventually, they bash down the king’s bedroom door where he is hiding, and behead him. The final scene is the king’s head rolling down the steps. From the floor, we see two feet of another member of the rebellion reach down and pick up the crown. We see him place it on his head from behind, thereby starting a new cycle of power and it’s inevitable abuse.

lyrics

Don’t need a reason to close up shop
These formalities, There of no use to me here on top
Lotta people have dropped for me to be where I am-
Fell just like beads of sand….And I gotta wonder….

What can you tell me from marks on my hands?
Ever so slowly you go right to the end
And read the captions as loud as you can
Show (tell) how to follow the who, where and when
A lot of images rise and fall just as you’d expect them to
It’s what you wanted what you wanted
All this time they meant nothing to you
When will they mean something to me?”
You gotta wonder…

You mean to tell me my reign is through…how can you be sure?
Are your visions pure? I think not!
I oughta have your head for this…but I’ve much to lose.
Put yourself in my shoes…and I gotta wonder…
