What’s it Mean?

This song is the ultimate cliff-hanger. It asks some of the most self indulgent, bordering on cliché questions into the void- “What does all of this mean?”
“What are we here for?”
“Why do I feel pulled to be an artist in a world that doesn’t even seem to value art any longer?”
“Does anything I’m doing matter?”

It describes the days where you just feel defeated. You feel like you’re giving it all, but you just don’t hear the echoes. No one knows who you are, and you barely know yourself. Still there’s this thing in you that keeps you steadfast through the struggle. “Your soul it still shines through the seems, yet you’re questioning all of your dreams and where you’re heading to, trying to figure out where you’ve been.”

I often times talk with fellow artists about the long climb we’re on either together or individually. You start out young and fresh with all your friends. It’s a gentle stride, more like a party easing up the mountain, with well-rested legs and full hearts. Slowly, some of your friends begin turning back. The climb is too high. The clouds are too thick. Maybe the view is good enough for now. Let’s set up camp here and make a life for ourselves. Who needs the top of the mountain? We can’t even see it. I’ve never even seen a picture of it, so why bother spending what might turn out to be an eternity going after a mere pie in the sky idea?

You look at your reflection and realize your beard is longer, maybe some grey hairs are sprouting. Your legs are tired and your back aches. You’re wasting away. “How long have I been out here,” you ask yourself. You can’t even see where you came from, which makes you a bit more nervous. If you don’t turn back now, you may never be able to.

You look around you again. Many of your friends and family have given up, but new people have replaced them. Perhaps not as many as at the base, but their hearts and souls are stronger, weather-worn and resilient. You will get to that top, but the questions won’t stop.

lyrics

These days I’m having trouble
Living life like I should
I wring my head out til it’s dry
But no use, and no excuse
Hell, why do I even try?
But I recognize all of the cries,
the familiar pleas.
I wish that they’d just leave me be.
But they won’t. Still they will
Get the best of me.

What’s it mean?
When your soul it still shines through the seams
Yet you’re questioning all of your dreams
And where you’re heading too
Trying to figure out where you’ve been. Kill the fear
That’s been building up with every year.
Before you know it it’ll all disappear.
And what you’re left with…
Finally it’s all crystal clear.

Sometimes I sit inside my head all day
Trying to figure out the next move to shoot me on my way.
I try to make the best out of today, but I have trouble.
Sometimes I struggle
And I remember thinking back as a child
“What’s this all about?”
Assuming by the time I was this age I’d have it figured out.
It seems I still got some ways to go,
But I still do all I can til I understand.

Tell me what’s it all mean
Who am I supposed to be?
Where are we going?
Can’t somebody Show me?
Help me, Help me please...
