Come to the Light

about

I wrote this after my band was falling apart do to my relationship with the bass player ending and subsequently causing a shit storm of headaches. Every time I thought about picking up the pieces and trying to make music together again or began to open up sessions, I’d hear her voice. It was really challenging.

“What have you done? You’ve made it hard for everyone…..” I stopped blaming anyone else for what had happened. I began to take on the responsibility for how I was dealing with things. I wanted to write a song of encouragement for myself that would get me back on track, back to what I was really creating music for in the first place-connection. I talked about this need in me create and more specifically to create music that would life people up. I wanted to be a vessel of light as opposed to wallowing in the darkness I felt. Don’t get me wrong, I love writing me some sad songs, and I certainly did during that period, but ultimately the goal is to share music that makes people feel good through it all. I

“Who could know how much you get when you just let go, kick your heels up and just enjoy the show?”
“Listen as the music plays the cadences of everyday, phrases that couldn’t lead any other way.” This talks to a very common theme in much of my music, which is the illusion of free will that often times appears a lot more like fate upon zooming out and seeing the entire mosaic.

Ultimately, I remember thinking about flies coming to light (minus the whole meeting their demise via electrocution) or that molly’d up person rubbing themselves all over the subwoofers in front of the stage. While a crude example, they don’t know why they do it, it just feels right. In a similar way, following your path just feels right. You may have any number of sound reasons that tell you to stop and do something else, something more sensible, something that makes more money, etc, but it will never feel the same way.

lyrics

What have you done?
You’ve made it hard for everyone
With your eyes gone numb staring up at the sun
You took the easy way and then blew it up, yet think it’s ok
Still, you’re gonna find yourself at the end of the day.

Pay attention to the signs.
There’s nobody else who can help you decide.
Don’t expect the voices to ever subside
They wanna know if you’re ready for the sacrifice.

Come to the light
You know you do it cause it feels right
Can’t turn away
Try as you might
Cause it’s where you belong
Finally come to hear the final song
No need to wait.
It won’t be long.
Come on and come to the light

Who could know how much you get when you just let go?
Kick your heels up and just enjoy the show?
Listen as the music plays the cadences of everyday
Phrases that couldn’t lead any other way.

We have yet to make our mark,
But we’ve had all that we needed right from the start.
Don’t you know I’d follow you into the dark,
But I’ll never need to because I know our part is to…
