I Give Thanks

about

I wrote most of this song in the back of a truck traveling through the hills of southern Thailand in 2015. I was pretty depressed at the time and needed to escape life for a while. Then, while hypnotized by the most beautiful landscapes I'd ever seen, gratitude began to well up inside of me and so did this melody. Even though it felt my life back home was in shambles, everything was exactly as it should be in that moment.

Elation washed over me and this little ditty made me feel so good, I actually forgot all about my troubles...and the song. I equate this to how terrible I am at remembering the feeling of the bad times as soon as times are good again. I returned to the "land of smiles" in 2018 and the feeling and the song immediately came rushing back. I committed to finishing it as soon as I got back to New York City. Two years of touring later......and I finally made good on that promise. Better late than never! That's one wonderful aspect to being quarantined in your apt most of the year.

My anxiety can be a real asshole at times, but this year I tried waking up every day and saying thank you for.....whatever pops into my head. I set the timer for five minutes and just let the stream of consciousness pour out. Time's always up before I'm done.

I sincerely hope this song makes you happy. If you are deranged like me and tend to get a little nauseous with this much steadfast positivity, fear not, I promise more dark introspective nightmare's to come. It's still good to feel good sometimes though.

lyrics

I give thanks for the times that I lost my way
Thanks for tomorrow and thanks for today
Thank-you for the wind that moves me forward
I give thanks with a heavy heart just the same
As when moved by some heavy art that calls my name
Each and every single day I give thanks

When I feel bad and the world just isn’t going my way
I think of all I have and my worries all, they all melt away

You can give thanks to the Buddha or to Jesus Christ
Or if you thank Hare Krishna, it’s just as nice
Thank-you to the sun that shines within me
I give thanks in the morning and twice at night
Thanks to the girl beside me, holding me tight
Each and every single day I give thanks

When I feel bad and the world just isn’t going my way
I think of all I have and my worries all, they all melt away

I give thanks for the family who brought me here
And taught me how good life can be without fear
Only I decide what deserves my attention
So I say thanks to the ones who gave up on me
And a big thanks to those who gave their love for free

Each and every single day
I find that life is better this way
When I think of all the reasons to say
Thanks
